Veterinary Assistant
We are a busy field service and surgical referral center focused on equine and farm animal patients. We have high tech equipment to perform radiographs, ultrasounds, arthroscopy, and endoscopy in the field and in hospital. We practice high quality equine and farm animal medicine, including emergency services, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
This position mainly focuses on riding around with our veterinarians and assisting them in everyday appointments such as: restraint, vaccines, dentals, joint injections, radiographs, lameness exams, etc. It will occasionally require you to stay in hospital and handle front desk work along with in-patient care and general custodial responsibilities.
Responsibilities
- Proactively assist veterinarians with patient care using appropriate protection and safety measures, including (but not limited to) preparing treatment area for patient examination, assisting with and/or performing diagnostic imaging and treatment, assisting with unloading from and onto trailers, inventory and restocking of all equipment used during appointments in trucks and treatment
- Collect and organize equipment for daily appointments, including restocking of veterinarian vehicle and treatment rooms
- Assist with lameness exams, amongst others, which involves trotting a patient in the round pen or in the provided by area from the client
- Help maintain the cleanliness of the practice, including but not limited to disinfecting surfaces, cleaning treatment and surgery areas, cleaning drains, stocking feeding stalls, and emptying trash
- Perform routine laboratory tests, documenting results and communicating with veterinarians
- Assist with preparation of surgical packs, tables, carts, medications, drapes, etc.
- Track procedures performed and medications used during appointments, to assist the veterinarian with invoicing and restocking
- Perform post-surgical and post-treatment cleaning procedures
- Complete billing in our HVMS.
- Assist with driving to and from appointments.
- Set-up for procedures which can include aseptic technique either in the field for minor procedures or in the sterile surgery suit
- Assist during any surgical procedures which includes but is not limited to restraint of the patient during anesthetization, assisting with transporting anesthetized or sedated patients, recording of vitals during procedure, and assisting with ensuring the DVM has proper surgical equipment and lighting available using aseptic techniques.
- Ability to restrain for examination and treatment of horses up to 1300 pounds
- Is available on scheduled days and times to be on call in case of an emergency which can include weekends and holidays
